Leopard tortoises are often kept as pets and people try to sell them. Sometimes, when this happens, they’re brought to us, as some people understand that this is not ok. Often we’re able to release them again but sometimes, the tortoises have experienced serious damage to their shells. This had happened to Frank, Susan and Tylor. Susan had been kept without sunlight and proper food for long time and therefore has a deformed shell and also suffers from regular respiratory problems. Frank lost one leg and cannot walk properly, while Tylor was brought to us with a shattered shell, which slowly heals but will never be sufficiently protecting him again. These three tortoises will stay with us and help to make students understand that tortoises are sensitive creatures, that can suffer from pain and mistreatment.
